なぜだか昔から、余分なものが好きです。
それはたとえば誰かのことを知りたいと思ったら、その人の名前とか年齢とか職業とかではなく、その人が朝なにを食べるのか、とか、どこの歯みがきを使っているのか、とか、子供のころ理科と社会とどっちが得意だったのか、とか、喫茶店で紅茶を注文することとコーヒーを注文することとどちらが多いのか、とか、そんなことばかり興味を持ってしまうということです。
余分なこと、無駄なこと、役に立たないこと。そういうものばかりでできている小説が書きたかった。
余分な時間ほど美しい時間はないと思っています。

人は言葉で
人間関係をあれこれ分析するのが大好きですが
そんな言葉では捉えきれないものが、
人間関係の大部分を作り出しています。
さっきあれだけののしっていた相手と
手を繋いで一緒に帰っていく人がいます。
非の打ち所のない恋人がいるのに
何となく満足できなくて、さまよってしまう人もいます。
好きか、嫌いか。
愛しているか、愛していないか。
惚れたか、惚れないか。
あれだけ複雑な恋愛を私たちは生きるにもかかわらず
それを表現する言葉の貧弱なことは、
おそろしいほどです。
言葉の数しか気持ちに種類がないとするなら
たぶん、恋なんか生まれようがないのかもしれません。
